Welcome to TVHC 2016/17

Posted by Mark Davenport on 2 September 2016

Welcome back from an incredible summer of hockey.  Aside from the fantastic achievements of Team GB Women’s hockey team winning Gold at Rio (which was watched by around 80 club members young and old in the club house), we’ve also seen:

  • Vale Fest – over 90 players had a fun weekend of hockey and partying in May
  • Summer League – saw some youngsters and Back to Hockey members play hockey alongside and against existing seniors members.
  • U16 Girls Academy – the Ladies 1st XI have been running fun sessions for girls who don’t have access to hockey at school
  • Back to Hockey Festival –B2H teams from Somerset came to Vale for a surprisingly competitive hockey tournament
  • Golf Day – the Men’s 1st XI organised a golf day as a fundraiser

Thank you to everyone who has been involved in organising these.

The impact of the Olympic Gold is already being felt, with new interest at junior level, but noticeably so with lots of new and returning members to the ladies section, but in particular at Back to Hockey on a Friday evening.

Now is the time for us to capitalise on the new interest in hockey, and engage more people in the sport.  Hockey really is a sport for anyone at any age.  This was proved at our HockeyFest day earlier this month, with the day starting and ending with Ladies O45s vs Girls and Men O40s vs U18 Boys. The single most effective form of marketing for anything we do, whether encouraging people to come and join in with our sport, or encouraging current members, friends and family to attend and support social events is through word of mouth.  It’s up to all of us to spread the word of hockey.

So what’s happening this season…

The Ladies 1st XI season has already commenced, with the rest of the Ladies section starting this forthcoming weekend, with all teams playing at home!  There are also plenty of Men’s pre-season fixtures, and the Men’s first round of the Somerset Cup taking place on Sunday.

In due course, we’ll be publishing the fixture booklet, which will be available from the bar.

The plan from this season is raise £27,000 a year for the foreseeable future, which will enable us to make significant investment into coaching and coach development, as well us purchasing all of the training equipment and aids required to help us train effectively across all levels of the club.

It is a club wide responsibility to raise this money, and when broken down into small targets, it’s actually a very achievable amount.

How can you help?:

  • Do you online shopping through Easy Fundraising.  Follow this link - http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/invite/M5E3F3/ It won’t cost you a penny extra on your shop, as the money is donated by the retailer.
    • Shop with over 3000 retailers online including – Amazon, John Lewis, eBay, Argos, Asos, Boots, Currys, Debenhams, Next, Sainsbury’s, Sports Direct, Vodaphone…the list goes on.
  • Business contacts - We’re requesting each senior team provides introductions to 10 businesses, and the junior section 20 introductions, in the hope that we convert these contacts into potential club sponsors or pitch side advertisers. We will also be hosting a sponsors evening on Tuesday 4th October, so if you're interested in what's on offer, then please get in touch with your team/sections fundraising representative.
  • Team fundraising – This year, the junior section has been set the task of raising £4000 and the senior section £6000 (£600 per senior team).
    • The Ladies 1st XI have already raised £250 through the U16 Girls Summer Academy.
    • The Men’s 1st XI have raised £400 with a Golf Day.

Be creative and inventive about how you raise funds. Bake sales? Fantasy league? Car washing? But also, target people outside of the club!

Membership subscriptions and payments

For the 2016/17 season, the junior section joins the senior section in the world of online registrations!  This has caused a few headaches for some, but it really is straight forward.  If you can’t remember your username or password to log in then click here.  Otherwise if that still doesn’t work, or you’re new this year, you’ll need to head here to set up a membership profile.

You’ll be sent details on how to pay your membership, which this year is being taken through GoCardless.  Please do not try to pay by any other method, as this does not tally with the payment tracking systems that we have set up.

Be aware, there is currently an early bird special for Student/Apprentice and Adult Memberships.  This is available before 1st October.  Don’t leave it until the eleventh hour.  Sort it out now.

Please also make yourselves familiar with the pricing structure of membership this season and what it entitles you to.  There are a number of changes.  Particularly around social membership.

Social Events

Each year the social secretaries put on a number of social events.  This season we have the following events coming up, so please put the date in your diary:

hOcktober Fest – Saturday 19th October – Don your lederhosen and dirndls, for an evening of Ooompah music, beer drinking (cider, wine and soft drinks are also available!), bratwurst eating, and general hilarity!

Christmas Quiz and Games Night – Saturday 10th December – An evening of fun and games.  Put on your most ghastly Christmas knitwear and win some prizes!

TVHC End of Season Dinner and Awards Night – Friday 31st March – Tickets will be available after Christmas, but put the date in your diary now.

All of the post Christmas socials will be advertised closer to the time, and will include a fun run, and wine tasting night.  Keep your eyes on Facebook and Twitter for social event updates.

As ever, we always like to welcome as many club members, friends and family members (including junior parents) to these social events, so please do come along!

Committee Members

There are a few new members on the clubs various committees this year.  A full list of committee members can be viewed here.  If you’re unsure who you need to speak to, please speak to your team captain, or PTM, and they will point you in the right direction.

Coaching and umpiring

This year, we expect to see more members, particularly a junior level.  We always need the support!  We also need more umpires to officiate junior and senior fixtures. If you’re interested in developing in these areas, and would be willing to help out over the course of the season please get in touch!  Please also make sure you’ve updated any information like this on your online membership profile.

Search for the next Chair Person

At the AGM I announced my intention to step down from the role of Chairman of the hockey club at the conclusion of this season.  I am now in the process of searching for a successor.  If you’d like to know more about the role, please come and see me.  Alternatively, if anyone has a suggestion/recommendation of who you think might step into the breach, again, please get in touch.

Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who was involved in orgnaising HockeyFest earlier this month.  We saw around 200 people pass through the club through the day, with volunteers manning the BBQ, raffle, hog roast, bouncy castle, face painting, and keeping hockey players young and old entertained with small sided games and activities. It certainly encouraged a few more people to join the senior section, and certainly Back to Hockey!

Lastly, to all of our new members, Welcome!  To our returning members, welcome back!  I wish everyone a fantastic season and look forward to seeing you on the pitch, or in the bar for a few drinks.
